Description
ATMS is the basic building block of ITS and cannot be deployed
without enabling tools and technologies. Based on a system engineering
approach to the deployment of an ITS project, it is necessary to
determine the technologies to be implemented after identifing problems,
goals and objectives, functions to be performed, and architecture
for the system. Particular emphasis is placed upon surveillance
technologies (vehicle detection) and dynamic message signs.
Objectives
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the operating principles for each tool of ATMS
- Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each tool of ATMS
Audience
Public-sector Transportation Professionals including US DOT engineers,
planners, project managers, and field staff, FTA Regional staff,
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Specialists, and others
as appropriate. Transportation professionals from state, regional,
and local agencies would also benefit from participation in the
course.
Length
Approximately eight hours.
Prerequisites
Students should have a basic familiarity with advanced transportation
management systems (ATMS).
